christian dior couture aw14

Instagram was awash with pictures from this show - as soon as I saw a couple of pictures I knew I'd love the whole collection. I've seen a few online discussions saying people were actually unimpressed with the collection, as it didn't really scream couture. Raf Simons was inspired by a whole range of decades and how these past times actually help to shape the way we view fashion now.

My favourite pieces were actually split between the simple pieces in the collection and the most extravagant. The great thing about this couture collection is that it had so many pieces that were actually wearable beyond the catwalk. The long-line edwardian style coats had to be the star of the collection for me. I can imagine teaming it with some skinny leather trousers, plain t-shirt and a mess hair-do for a totally rock and roll look. Although Simons' is not designing with the average person in mind, lets not forget most of these items are in the 5 figure stratosphere and above, I think that it had a lot of potential for the mainstream. Most wouldn't see this as a good thing as couture is meant to be sacred, but I think the more designers hold an influence the longer their careers seem to span.
Unlike Elie Saab who designed a strictly extravagant collection, Simons displayed his talent with this truly varied affair.
