Review: Kiss Me Kate The Grand Theatre LeedsFriday, 2 October 2015
It's nice when an email pops into my inbox that invites me to try something new. When I received an email about seeing Kiss Me Kate at The Grand Theatre in Leeds, I couldn't say no. It was nice that I was able to take my mum along with me too, (hi, I know you're reading this) as we are both big musical fans. This particular production was in collaboration with Opera North. I don't have any experience of Opera so I was intrigued as to what the night had in store for us.
For those of you who don't know much about Kiss Me Kate, it is a play within a play. We join the cast as they prepare to take on Shakespeare's classic The Taming of the Shrew. The audience get a behind the scenes look into what happens off stage for these characters as they prepare for opening night. This play is 'fourth wall' breaking at its best, the audience feel like they are in on all the jokes and bits.
The cast were absolutely brilliant, each one bringing something unique to their character. The whole company start the show with 'Another Op'nin Another Show' which gave me those goosebumps you get when something just works. I have to also point out that the play is amazingly funny too, the songs are sharp and the comedic timing was spot on.
For me Tiffany Graves as Lois Lane/Bianca was a real stand out, her performance of 'Always True To You In My Fashion' was brilliantly executed and again the comedy of her character really shone through. Jeni Bern as Lilli Vanessi/Katherine brought real fire and passion to the role and man has that lady got a set of pipes on her! Quirijn De Lang as Fred Graham/Pertruchio oozed confidence and looked so at ease on the stage.
If you looking for a night out with a difference and fancy a good laugh head over to The Grand Theatre website and book your tickets now, there are only 4 performances in Leeds so book now to avoid disappointment!
