You might of just bought your house which could mean you're low on funds for a little while. Or you might be renting and the way you can decorate your house is very limited. I've come up with my top 5 ways to update your home on a budget.

1. Art
The first thing that can instantly lift any room is a colourful print. They can add some character to your home and you can move them around easily. This lovely yellow NYC print is from Oliver Bonas (£49). This would look great on white walls or even a dark grey - Oliver Bonas have loads of different prints to suit any room.

2. Lighting
Standing lamps are perfect for throwing light into dark corners of your home. The light itself can become a statement piece in its own right. I loved this standing lamp from BHS (£135), it has that movie light feel about it and would look great in my own house actually...

3. Cushions
You might be renting somewhere that comes furnished or you might have bought a plain sofa for your house that needs an added bit of colour. This yellow cushion from Next (£16) would be a welcome addition to any living room. Adding a little bit of colour through some bright cushions is a great way to add some personality to your room, without having to commit to a brightly coloured wall.

4. Mirrors
Ever find yourself with a blank wall and unsure what to do with it? You might not want to add something too fussy as this can make the room look smaller. Adding a mirror can actually make the room look bigger, reflecting light and giving the illusion of space. I thought this hanging mirror from Sainsbury's (£24) was the perfect mix of retro and modern, I couldn't believe the price either!

5. Greenery
When you decorate a room plants are often an after thought but they do bring the room together. Buying real plants can become extremely expensive, so you maybe would only buy a couple. Luckily there are some great fake alternatives. I loved this little pot of succulents from Homesense (£3.99). As they are so inexpensive you could purchase a fair few and add them to a floating shelf for an instant focal point.
