When you think of a Chinese restaurant certain connotations spring to mind. A little bit tacky, all you can eat style buffets which leave you feeling full but unsatisfied.
Mans Market in Leeds is here to change all of your perceptions. The restaurant itself has a cool street market vibe – keep an eye out for the wall full of lucky cats when you walk in.
The entrance makes quite an impression so I was looking forward to seeing the rest of the interiors.
The experience carries on even after you sit down at your table. There are cards above you that read ‘I’m hungry’ on one side and ‘I’m thirsty’ on the other. A great way to get the wait staffs attention! I really loved the cocktails that came served in ‘takeaway’ cartons, it was perfect Instagram fodder.
The food itself was pretty special too. The noodle dishes were a particular favourite of mine, lots of flavour but nothing too over powering. Of course we all were in love with the deep fried ice-cream. What’s not to love? The way the food is served means it would be the perfect place for a larger group of friends to dine and chat. Maybe the new place for after work drinks?
We sat down for a while with the owner Ray Chan who told us that it was his mission to create something a little different. He wanted chinese food to shed its tacky edge and take its place as a cuisine to contend some of the other heavy weights in Leeds (I’m looking at you Thai food) – and you know what I think he just might do it.
