Abigail and Chloe | Graphic Designers & IllustratorsMonday, 16 January 2017
I really like to look at a wide range of careers when finding inspiring women for this segment. I put a call out on Twitter and found these lovely ladies. Another reason to love social media, it made me aware of their work!
Introduce yourself and what you do...
We are Chloe and Abigail, the creative twin-team behind Buttercrumble. We believe that when you choose a job you love, you really don't have to work another day in your life! This is what we decided to pursue and if we're not illustrating, then we're designing.
Scarborough is where we were born and raised (on a diet of fish and chips and ice-cream). It was amazing being a child at the seaside and is something we often miss when we're amongst the bright lights of the city. In 2013, we enrolled at the University of Leeds studying Graphic & Communication Design. After recently graduating in 2016, we decided to stay! Leeds has an exciting art scene that we haven fallen in love with.
What steps did you take to secure your dream career?
It has been a slow and organic process for us. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon! Whilst we were still at school, we began sharing our work online. The response from this boosted our confidence and motivated us to follow our dreams of creativity. This continued and we gained the relevant qualifications to develop Buttercrumble. In our final year at university, we became enterprise scholars which catapulted our business into a new professional ballpark. We also worked in local design agencies alongside and after our studies to build our industry experience. On this journey we networked and built strong connections within the community which was the final ingredient which enabled our dreams to become a reality.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to pursue the same career?
It REALLY is a case of "it's not what you know, it's who you know". We can not recommend networking enough. So many of our projects have come from word-of-mouth and recommendations. If you have a talent that others can benefit from, share it as much as you can. Shout it from the rooftops if you must!
What has been your proudest moment at work to date? (It could be past or present job)
Our proudest moment was when we were finally prepared to take the leap and take Buttercrumble full-time! We couldn't have achieved so much without the support of friends, family, colleagues and clients. We may be at the beginning of our "business journey", but we are already speeding along and cannot wait to discover what the future holds.
Who or what inspires you?
We are inspired by mid-century design, vintage fashion and all things cute! Hopefully these influences can be seen through our illustration and graphic design. One of our favourite designers has to be Orla Kiely because of her bold use of shape and colour. Her pattern design is so versatile, it is used across everything from wallpaper to plant pots. Legend, Paul Rand, is another inspiration of ours. He is widely known for his corporate design (the IBM logo) however he also produced many modernist illustrations.
Last book you read...
Chloe: Sali Hughes' Pretty Iconic. Let this be your beauty bible. Not only is the content insightful, the design and photography is gorgeous.
Abigail: Jo Malone's My Story. If you're a female entrepreneur or perfume enthusiast, then do read Jo's autobiography! She discusses how her business came to be and the beginnings of her new venture. She has to be another inspiration of ours.
Last album you listened to...
So the last album we listened to was actually The Carpenters' Greatest Hits. Sometimes when you work, it's best to switch on the easy-listening tunes. Sibling teams unite!
Mantra in life…
If first you don't succeed, try, try and try again. However, don't be afraid to be flexible and attempt different approaches if the first time isn't a success.
