I guess my earliest memory of anything to do with feminism was the Spice Girls. As weird as it sounds. Girl Power lit a fire under a lot of girls and young women, telling us ‘you don’t have to behave a certain way!’ It was like a breath of fresh air.
Feminism has taken centre stage lately, with the women’s march and comments from certain politicians. More and more women are taking a stand and making sure their voices are heard – it feels like a great time to be a woman!
I’ve never understood women who say they aren’t Feminists. To quote Maya Angelou “I’m a feminist. I’ve been a female for a long time now. It’d be stupid not to be on my own side.” The definition of feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Doesn’t sound like such a bad thing does it? I know some of my readers might not even of thought of themselves as feminists before. But ask yourselves this – do you believe you should be treated differently because of something you had no control over?
I’m at a point in my life where I’m surrounded by amazing inspirational women. It such a pleasure to know them and celebrate them. Don’t forget to let them know how much you appreciate them today and everyday.
I’m wearing this t-shirt with pride today. It’s started lots of conversations already and gives me a chance to talk more about International Women’s Day and what it means to be a woman in 2017. I’d like to write more about women’s issues all year round – it’s something I like to read about on other blogs. What do you think?
You can buy this t-shirt here. 25% of every t-shirt sale will be donated to the International Women’s Day 2017 charity partners Catalyst and WAGGGS on the 8th of March, so be quick!
